The Colors of Winter
by Nancy Muldowney
When we lived in a more northerly climate, the colors of winter, to me, were blues and violets scurrying across the hills and valleys of white. The frosty winds swirled around reddened noses and chilled you right to the bone. The whole landscape was clean and white or sooty and grey. In The Golden Isles, the winter landscape is aglow with earthy ambers and golds. Here and there, an alizarin azalea blooms in defiance of the chilly winds of the season. Shades of violet permeate the marshes but they are not the cooler purple shadows defining the northern snows. I love the crystal clear cerelean blue skies of winter here that are void of the heaviness of summer's heat and humidity.
Perhaps I get excited about bright colors at this time of year because after the wonderful reds and greens of the Holiday season and all the glowing lights, January seems a little pale and lackluster. I search out anything with cheery colors. Today at a meeting, someone was wearing a yellow daffodil colored sweater and it just gave me a warm and hopeful feeling. Color is a boost to our senses and can flavor our moods.
Colors abound in other ways than in the landscape this month. There is "The Chili Cook Off" sponsored by the Glynn County Rotary Club in Redfern Village. This event evokes the color red in my mind and it will definitely put a fire in your belly. Abundant golds of the antique brass items and the warm and rich brown wood tones of the fine mahogany and walnut pieces of furniture will be seen at the fund raiser for the Safe Harbor Shelter.
If you think of our art organizations here, you would have to put a rainbow around The Golden Arts and Humanities. They have a great variety of performances, exhibits and projects that you could assign a myriad of colors to each event. While The Glynn Art Association might be a vision in yellow with its sun face logo and its many festivals and exhibits, which bring warmth and camaraderie to all who attend. The local art galleries all have their own flavor that could evoke some distinctive color.
